Clam Ice Fishing Fish Trap Yukon TC Ice Shelter Review:
The Clam Yukon TC Ice Shelter is a complete portable set for the ice fisherman! The deep well sled is solid and can hold the ice house collapsed down, along with tons of gear (auger, propane/heater, rods, etc.). The sled is durable and pulls well, especially behind a snowmobile or 4-wheeler.
The house/sled weighs 92 pounds - so it can be 'heavy' to pull manually, especially when you add more weighty gear inside. It can also be challenging to lift the sled into a vehicle. It may not be possible to get this into a tall box pick-up truck by yourself. In a SUV, this will take up almost all but the front seat area as it is rather later (packed it is 65" long by 38" wide and just over 2 feet tall).
When setup, the fishable area is 20 square feet (50 inches long by 58 inches wide) with a 70 inch center height. It is a good amount of space - can fit four holes, two larger people and loads of gear relatively comfortably.
The top is insulated, which not only helps retain heat - but also reduces condensation. The side walls, front and rear are NOT insulated, but still work like traditional ice houses - and keep you warm and protected from the wind and elements. The skirt area gives you enough fabric to cover with snow/slush to form a comfortable seal to the ice. There is a zipper door in both front and back - a nice feature for helping to manage access around gear. There are 2 windows in front, 2 windows in back and 1 on each side placed appropriately. There are an air exchange vents on the top on both sides to help ensure fresh air without losing too much heat.
The seats are comfortable and slide back and forth - which is helpful in terms of positioning yourself over a hole for jigging comfortably. However, the seats do not adjust left to right - a minor inconvenience. The front of the seat relies on the plastic sled frame for support. We did find that after some use by heavier-set individuals, the sled would "bend" or bow slightly under the front of the seat - again, only a minor inconvenience.
Set up is relatively easy, but we do find the push pin and thin diameter pipes to be less than ideal construction/durability (several of our "push pins" broke over time). The spreaderbars are excellent in terms of providing rigidity, but can be a bit of a hassle to work with during setup and takedown.
We did pair our Clam Fish Trap Yukon TC Ice Shelter with several other accessory items, reviewed here:
