Sierra Infinity Exterior Ballistic Software | Version 6 Review:
The Sierra Infinity Exterior Ballistic Software is an excellent exterior ballistics program. Basically, you enter key information about your bullet (at a minimum, Ballistic Coefficient). From there, you can add a wide variety of firing conditions including altitude, wind conditions, angle of the gun barrel, etc. The program will then provide you with a full set of data & graphics to help you determine velocity, energy, drop, bullet path height, and crosswind drift. The program includes much more than we can list here, but the key is that it provides you the ability to enter the key conditions and bullet info and then provides you with insights to help better manage your shooting experience.
The program is very easy to install and very easy to use. Once installed, you can start by "Loading Bullet" info; you can either select from a vast library of existing manufactured bullets or you can enter your own custom info. Once you've done that, you modify the Trajectory info as necessary, including the Zero Range (your gun's zero), the height of your sight, muzzle velocity, max & min range (for charting). Then, you edit environmental data as necessary from barometric pressure to wind direction. Then you "accept the values" and "load" the data. What you get is a chart similar to below:
In this example, I've selected a .223, 55 grain full metal jacket boat tail bullet (Federal's Power-Shock). With the variables selected and with the rifle zeroed in at 200 yards, I can estimate bullet drop at different distances. For instance, in this scenario, to make a 350 yard shot, my bullet would drop 12.23 inches and since I entered a 5 MPH crosswind (coming from 3 o'clock), the bullet would drift 6.64 inches (toward 9 o'clock - or from right to left). Of course, there is a ton more information here, but for the basic rifle shooter, this is the most essential info.
Before each rifle shooting trip, I run the ballistics info for each bullet. I print out these charts, trim them down to a business card size and laminate them so they are easy to keep it with my rifles while traveling/shooting (beats hauling a laptop into the field). There is no doubt that the Sierra Infinity Exterior Ballistic Software made a positive impact on my shooting experience. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in improving their rifle shooting experiences!
