Primos Power Crystal Friction Call Review:
This call is one of my favorite calls. It is great as a locator call as it puts off a lot of sound. I once faked out another hunter who thought I was a hen turkey (be careful, that can be dangerous). This call doesn't work well in the rain - in fact doesn't work at all if it gets wet and you are using the wood striker. Primos makes the same call with a wet/dry striker. I haven't tried that one, but heard it works better in the rain.
When you purchase this product, the crystal is smooth and clear. You really need to rough it up and be aggressive when you do this. The more you sand it, the better it gets. I purchased the Primos Slick Stick which has a rough and smooth sanding side plus a place to store a piece of sandpaper. This works well and is easy and compact to carry with.
This call does great short clucks to the longer rhythms to soft purrs. After sanding, I try different spots on the call. I listen for the sound I want. Once I find that spot, I will do short circles in that same spot to get it conditioned just right. I will try to have 3 or 4 of these spots conditioned before going to the field. My call will have multiple little circles on it at the end of the day. Don't overuse one spot as it will get smooth over time. At the end of the day, I will re-rough up the whole call and start over.
Be careful not to be too loud with this calls once turkeys get closer. You really need to finesse the call once you can see the turkeys. I like the flexibility of being able to be aggressive and loud all the way to softer sounds.
